Introduction.
What Makes PV Sindhu One of the World’s Most Consistent Badminton Champions?
Fresh from her impressive Japan Open triumph, PV Sindhu has once again demonstrated why she remains one of India’s greatest sporting icons. Behind every powerful smash, lightning-fast rally and international medal lies years of disciplined training, intelligent recovery, personalised nutrition and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Elite badminton is among the most physically demanding sports in the world. Players must repeatedly accelerate, decelerate, jump, lunge and change direction while maintaining exceptional focus over long matches. Success depends on much more than technical ability—it requires strength, endurance, recovery, hydration and a carefully planned nutrition strategy.
In this special feature by sports journalist S. Kannan, we explore Sindhu’s remarkable journey and the science that continues to support her pursuit of excellence
Celebrate PV Sindhu, who emerged winner at the Japan Open on Sunday by shocking home favourite Akane Yamaguchi in straight games. At the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Sindhu towered over her rival, literally.
Standing 5 feet 11 inches tall by Indian standards and weighing 63kg, Sindhu has shown that her hunger remains intact. Indeed, she is going to be a strong force at the BWF World Championship to be held in August in New Delhi, and is being backed by seasoned pro Vimal Kumar, who has been guiding her in recent years.
The last few years have been unkind to Sindhu, easily one of India’s most recognisable stars, who has done the nation proud. As a double Olympic medallist, silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and bronze in Tokyo (2021), Sindhu was nowhere near a medal in Paris 2024. However, the girl-turned-lady, who married Venkata Sai Dutta in December 2024 in Hyderabad, has not slipped into the stereotype and settled for an easy life. If anything, Sindhu acknowledges, not one but two men keep pushing her to the peak and to stay on top.
First comes hubby Sai Dutta and the second is Wayne Lombard, who has been looking after the strength and conditioning aspect. This writer has tracked Sindhu’s career and her family for over the last 15 years. Her father PV Ramanna and mother PV Vijaya both played volleyball, so Sindhu was bound to pick up a sport which would suit her.
In India, the role played by parents is big. Sindhu is lucky her parents and husband are still pushing her to go full tilt. By every stretch of imagination, she can do well at the Asian Games in Nagoya this year, and even back herself for one more shot at Olympic glory at the LA Olympics in 2028. When Sindhu produced that burst in Rio and won a silver medal, it was massive. After all, only she and Sakshi Malik brought India glory. Sindhu could even have won gold, but her opponent — Carolina Marin – was wily.
Then came the dark days of the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Sindhu was cramped. Stadia had shut in Hyderabad, practice sessions were next to impossible, and the postponed Tokyo Olympics were looming. How Sindhu used her own residence driveway in Hyderabad to go through fitness drills, how she trained at the Suchitra Academy in Hyderabad, all worked for her before Tokyo. She then managed access to play at the Gachibowli Stadium so that she could visualise a big playing arena and prepare for Tokyo was defining.
Her training methods have been very scientific, where the first lessons came from her own father, who played volleyball. Ramanna knew that constant jumps would hurt the knees and ankles. So, he had to prepare Sindhu for the rigours. Sindhu has dealt with injuries, but what has been defining is that she bounced back each time with rest, rehab, strength and conditioning.
In four days, the Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow. The badminton event does not figure in the programme this time, but it is worth recalling how Sindhu almost risked her life at the last CWG in 2022 in Birmingham. She won gold, but that was with a left ankle injury. She never told her father about it, as her heart craved glory at the CWG. She had to be away from the badminton court for a long period, which was painful, on her return to Hyderabad.
Defining for Sindhu, her hunger to stay fit and deal with a few small issues.
A few fans would not know that Sindhu has been dealing with a condition where she sweats excessively. So, her body loses vital electrolytes. To understand what exactly goes on in her body, Sindhu went to the Gatorade lab for a ‘sweat test’ and got to know what her planned fluid intake would be to ensure her salts were optimal. This was almost four years back.
Each year of wear and tear and constant use of her body means Sindhu has to train smartly. In that direction, she has used science judiciously. Her ability to maintain almost the same weight, ensure she is nimble on her feet and can use her wingspan to unfurl shots from the air are all factored.
Sindhu’s diet has been designed by the experts who know what she likes and how to plan for her matches and daily training regimen. If the morning meal comprises eggs, milk, and fresh fruits, her lunch is about salad, dal, lentils, a small portion of rice, veggies, and curd. As a conscious decision, she keeps her carb intake low. In her snack menu, she loves dry fruits and fresh fruits, while dinner is similar to lunch. Based on advice from experts, she uses whey protein to add to her dietary requirements as well.
In terms of her training, on and off-court, Sindhu’s schedule is heavy-duty. Badminton is a fast sport. She has to jump, smash, be light on her feet, and also show flexibility to retrieve, as well as jump and dive. As Sindhu is tall, she has to bend much more before flicking the shuttle back into play. Resistance training, with bands tied to her waist, and agility drills to ensure she is sharp, come through side-shuffles, single-leg jumps, and more. Weight training is also integrated into her daily programme.
Not many would know she wakes up by 4 am and begins her day. Her on-court drills are heavy-duty, aiming at building muscle memory. A packed morning can include smashing the bird 1,000 times in a single session.
Motivational, isn’t it?
PV Sindhu’s journey reminds us that championships are rarely won on match day alone. They are built through thousands of training sessions, disciplined nutrition, intelligent recovery, consistent hydration and an unwavering commitment to improvement. Her story is a powerful reminder that success is created through the small habits repeated every single day.
FitCart Insight: Supporting Performance Through Trusted Sports Nutrition

At Fitcart.com, we believe athletes and active individuals should choose sports nutrition that prioritises quality, transparency and safety. Whether training for international competition or simply improving personal fitness, nutrition should always complement a balanced diet, structured training plan and guidance from qualified healthcare or sports nutrition professionals.
Sports Science is Now the Difference Between Good and Great
Today’s elite badminton players work with multidisciplinary performance teams that include strength and conditioning coaches, physiotherapists, sports physicians, nutritionists and recovery specialists.
Training programmes are carefully designed to improve:
- Explosive lower-body power
- Speed and agility
- Injury resilience
- Muscle recovery
- Endurance
- Mobility
- Balance and coordination
For tall athletes like PV Sindhu, maintaining mobility, core stability and lower-body strength is particularly important to handle the repeated lunges, jumps and rapid directional changes demanded by international badminton.
Hydration & Electrolytes
Hydration Can Win or Lose Matches
Badminton players often lose significant amounts of fluids and electrolytes during intense training and competition, especially in hot and humid environments.
Personalised hydration strategies—including sweat-rate testing—allow athletes to understand how much sodium and fluid they lose, helping them replace what their bodies need before, during and after competition.
Proper hydration supports:
- Faster reaction times
- Better concentration
- Improved muscle function
- Reduced fatigue
- Lower risk of cramps
- Faster recovery between matches
Nutrition & Recovery
Nutrition Supports Performance Every Day
Food remains the foundation of athletic performance.
Elite badminton players require adequate energy, quality protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals to support intensive training schedules and recovery.
A balanced performance nutrition plan commonly focuses on:
- High-quality protein for muscle repair
- Complex carbohydrates for training energy
- Healthy fats for overall health
- Fruits and vegetables for antioxidants
- Calcium and vitamin D for bone health
- Adequate hydration throughout the day
Depending on individual needs and advice from qualified sports nutrition professionals, athletes may also include evidence-based sports nutrition products such as whey protein, electrolyte drinks or carbohydrate recovery formulations to help meet increased nutritional demands.
Strength Training Matters
Building Power Without Increasing Injury Risk
Modern badminton players spend considerable time in the gym developing strength that translates directly onto the court.
Strength training may include:
- Squats
- Deadlifts
- Lunges
- Single-leg stability work
- Plyometrics
- Resistance band drills
- Medicine ball exercises
- Core strengthening
Combined with mobility exercises and recovery work, these programmes help athletes generate explosive movement while reducing the risk of overuse injuries.
Recovery Is Training
Elite athletes understand that improvement happens during recovery—not only during practice.
Recovery strategies commonly include:
- 7–9 hours of quality sleep
- Active recovery sessions
- Mobility work
- Stretching
- Physiotherapy
- Massage
- Foam rolling
- Balanced nutrition
- Hydration
Consistent recovery allows athletes to maintain performance throughout long tournament seasons.
