To millions of cricket fans, the curtains coming down on former Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s career, possibly on June 19, at Lord’s, in the final ODI against England, is sad. And emotional. Yet, if you look at what Hitman has achieved as a cricketer, it is massive.
People will talk of his batting records, his leadership skills and being a buddy to teammates. What has, perhaps, not been amplified is how Rohit Sharma dealt with his own fitness. Fans on social media riled and ridiculed him for being overweight. His belly bulge was highlighted, perhaps not understanding that all athletes cannot be lean and trim. Yet, of late, Rohit was looking lean and hungry for runs.
From ‘Vada Pav’ Label to Lean Athlete
The 39-year-old, called ‘vada pav’ because of the famous high-carb Mumbai snack, had the nickname stick to him like a label. The fat around his midriff was pronounced. Yet, what is a lesson for all cricketers and fitness enthusiasts is that, last year, Rohit underwent a massive transformation.
After retiring from the Test format last summer, before the tour to England, Rohit hit the gym hard. So hard that he reportedly lost around 11kg.
When Rohit lost weight, fans went into a tizzy. How did he do this? No, he did not use the now common SGLT-1 drugs like Mounjaro. Rohit instead followed a disciplined training and nutrition programme.
Cardio, Strength Training and Discipline
Rohit followed a hard fitness drill, heavy on cardio workouts, and backed it with systematic weight training.
The Rohit of today and the Rohit of 2023, when India made the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup, are different. Even in 2024, when India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Rohit was noticeably heavier.
According to former India coach Abhishek Nayar, Rohit wanted to undergo a massive transformation. His goal was to become fitter with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
That the BCCI has now moved in a different direction and Yashasvi Jaiswal is part of the future plans is unfortunate for Rohit. Yet, he never relied on past achievements. He worked hard, systematically sculpted his body, burnt fat and became significantly leaner.
Becoming Fitter, Stronger and More Agile
“Fitter, stronger, agile” — that was what Rohit wanted to become, Abhishek Nayar told JioHotstar.
Appearance was not deceptive. A fitter Rohit looked sharper. He was quicker on his feet, and his stroke play looked more fluent and aggressive.
It is well documented that Rohit also changed his diet.
Nutrition Played an Important Role
He quit heavy carbohydrates, notably vada pav, and embraced a diet richer in protein, fibre and nutrient-dense foods.
Protein-rich meals, leafy green vegetables and better hydration became part of his routine.
Sadly, batting form and age have ultimately influenced the selectors’ decision regarding his international future.
What Every Fitness Enthusiast Can Learn from Rohit Sharma
There are valuable lessons from Rohit Sharma’s transformation for cricket lovers and anyone pursuing better health. His focus on:
- Regular cardio
- Progressive weight training
- Core strength
- High-intensity workouts
- Consistency
- Protein intake
- Hydration
shows that body transformation comes through discipline rather than shortcuts.
For the record, Rohit also uses protein shakes and smoothies as part of his routine. Hydration has also remained an important focus throughout his fitness journey.
