Mirabai Chanu—just mentioning her name inspires admiration. As one of India’s greatest sporting icons and a champion in the demanding sport of Olympic weightlifting, Mirabai carries the hopes of more than a billion Indians every time she steps onto the competition platform.

When the barbell is loaded and the competition begins, Mirabai becomes the picture of focus and determination. She knows she has trained relentlessly and prepared meticulously. Yet, in elite sport, everything ultimately comes down to one day. When everything clicks, medals follow. When it doesn’t, even the best athletes can be left heartbroken.

At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Mirabai Chanu is full of confidence. Turning 32 next month, she is focused on defending her dominance in the 48kg category.

“I am hoping for gold,” she says.

The athlete who has become a symbol of power and grace knows her training programme has been carefully planned. Yet Glasgow is only one step, as she must peak once again for the Asian Games in Nagoya this September.

Mirabai’s home in Manipur already houses an impressive medal collection. Another Commonwealth Games gold would mark a remarkable hat-trick. Yet despite spending much of each year away from home at national training camps, she has learned to make those camps her second home.

Her success story is inspiring, but it has also been shaped by adversity.

Following the Rio Olympics in 2016, Mirabai did not fail; she failed to complete a lift (did not finish/register a total). Mirabai endured one of the most difficult periods of her life. Standing just 4 feet 11 inches tall, the disappointment weighed heavily on her shoulders. Rather than returning home immediately, she remained in the training camp, quietly processing the heartbreak—an emotional chapter few people truly know about.

Behind every champion’s success are moments of pain, sacrifice and resilience.

Where many people might step away after repeated injuries, Mirabai has consistently chosen to fight back. She embodies the spirit of Nari Shakti—the strength of Indian women.

During numerous conversations with this writer over the past decade, Mirabai has spoken openly about the physical and emotional challenges of injury rehabilitation. Recovery is never easy. It demands patience, determination and unwavering mental strength. Alongside the expertise of world-class doctors and physiotherapists, it is her own resilience that has repeatedly brought her back to the highest level.

Her Olympic silver medal at the Tokyo Games, fourth-place finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics, World Championship medals and multiple Asian medals underline her status as one of the world’s elite weightlifters.

Yet beneath those achievements is a humble human being whose dedication continues to inspire millions.

Training consumes her daily life. Every championship requires months of disciplined preparation, where barbells, technique, recovery and consistency become her entire world.

One aspect of Mirabai’s preparation that surprises many people is her tightly controlled nutrition. To remain within her weight category while preserving strength and muscle mass, she carefully limits her daily calorie intake to approximately 1,600 calories.

Despite this relatively modest intake, her demanding training sessions often burn significantly more energy. Maintaining performance while staying within strict bodyweight limits requires careful planning and support from experienced sports nutrition professionals.

Her breakfast typically includes boiled eggs, potatoes, daliya, avocado and fruit.

Lunch often consists of dal, salads and seafood whenever available, with grilled salmon or pomfret helping provide high-quality protein and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

Snacks remain light, while dinner generally focuses on lean protein, vegetables rich in fibre and carefully balanced nutrition to support recovery without unnecessary weight gain.

Mirabai’s training programme is not designed for the average gym-goer.

She trains six days each week, often spending around seven hours per day in structured sessions. Her programme includes Olympic lifting, strength development, core stability, mobility work, technical refinement and explosive power training under close supervision.

Every lift demands precision, speed and flawless technique.

Throughout her career she has battled numerous injuries, working alongside renowned sports rehabilitation expert Dr. Aaron Horschig in the United States during parts of her recovery journey.

Sunday serves as her primary recovery day, incorporating ice baths, contrast therapy and deep tissue massage before another demanding training week begins.

Week after week.

Month after month.

Year after year.

That relentless commitment is what separates champions from everyone else.
