Indian sport battles a massive doping problem. Even as the nation prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and aspires to host the Summer Olympics in 2036, there is serious concern over how India can emerge “clean.”

Rewind to 2001, when Beijing was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Western world was up in arms, alleging that China had used indigenous doping methods. In Ma Junren, they had an athletics coach accused of giving athletes magic potions to enhance performance. At that time, China knew that with advancements in anti-doping, it had to crack down hard.

India, too, needs to adopt the same measures. The directive from the highest levels of government is clear: doping must be stopped and the supply chain arrested. The recent spate of doping incidents in judo and weightlifting has set the cat among the pigeons. In a conversation with Fitcart.com, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala opened up on the menace and what needs to be done.

Dr. Pardiwala is a legend in the field of orthopaedic surgery and serves as Chief Medical Officer of the Indian contingent at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He is the doctor athletes turn to when in trouble. Be it a fracture or a ligament tear, Dr. Pardiwala is there to heal. Rewind to the horrific car crash that nearly killed Rishabh Pant. How Pant was nearly crippled and then brought back to his feet is testament to a remarkable operation led by Dr. Pardiwala. There are many more stories of athletes resurrected, in a sense, by a doctor who seems to produce magic.

But now Dr. Pardiwala is more concerned about doping, and about supplements being used that are not tested properly.

“There is no shortcut to success. You have to work hard and toil. In my view, doping is a shame, and it must be stopped,” said Dr. Pardiwala.

Elaborating on the menace, he said there has to be a concerted effort from all stakeholders. If not, the growth of dope cheats will not stop.

“Cheaters have no chance of getting to the top. They are going to get caught, as testing methods are so much more efficient now,” he said.

Speaking about those caught inadvertently, Dr. Pardiwala said not all athletes are cheats.

“You cannot paint everyone with the same brush. Taking over-the-counter supplements is dangerous. Nobody knows what they contain, and stopping this has to be a priority. To my mind, every batch of supplements sold in the market has to be tested. There is simply no way athletes can be sure of what these supplements contain, or whether they are free from substances banned by WADA,” he added.

He has elsewhere warned that as many as 90% of over-the-counter supplements can contain contaminants.

Looking ahead, Dr. Pardiwala, who has worked with numerous elite athletes, feels that sports science, nutrition, doping education, and a scientific sports system are imperative to producing champions.

“We in India have to be very careful, even with young athletes. There has to be education in a concerted way,” he concluded.

Fitcart.com Perspective: Why Clean, Tested Supplements Matter in Modern Sport

As competitive sport continues to evolve, athletes are constantly searching for ways to improve performance, recovery, strength, endurance, and overall health. However, the foundation of performance must always remain training, nutrition, recovery, discipline, and ethical sporting practices.

Supplements can play a role in supporting athletes when used responsibly, but safety and quality control are critical. The global concern around supplement contamination highlights why athletes, coaches, parents, and sports professionals must carefully choose products from trusted sources.

A supplement label alone is not always enough. Athletes should look for products that demonstrate:

  • Batch testing and quality certification
  • Transparent ingredient labelling
  • Testing for banned substances
  • Manufacturing in safe, approved facilities
  • Quality assurance processes from trusted brands
  • Evidence-based ingredients supported by scientific research

For elite athletes competing under anti-doping regulations, even accidental contamination can have serious consequences. A product containing undeclared ingredients or prohibited substances may put an athlete’s career, reputation, and achievements at risk.

This is why Fitcart.com strongly supports the principles of Clean Sport, athlete education, and responsible supplementation.

At Fitcart.com, our focus is on providing access to trusted, clean-labelled, tested, and responsibly sourced nutrition products. We believe athletes deserve confidence in what they consume, whether they are competing at grassroots level, national competitions, or on the world stage.

Sports nutrition should support athletes — not put their careers at risk.

Protecting India’s Future Champions Through Education

Building a successful sporting nation requires more than identifying talent. It requires:

  • Better sports nutrition education
  • Awareness among young athletes and parents
  • Guidance from qualified professionals
  • Stronger anti-doping awareness
  • Responsible supplement selection
  • Scientific training and recovery programmes

The next generation of Indian athletes must be equipped not only to win medals but also to compete with integrity.

Clean sport is not just about avoiding banned substances — it is about protecting athlete health, fairness, and the future of Indian sports.
